Annnd begin…..

My name is Erin, “E”, “Auntie”, “Mommy” and “Mimsy”. I am a 45 year old woman, wife* and now officially an “underground momma”. The reason I decided to start this blog and name it “The Underground Momma”, is because of recent changes in NYS law. On Thursday, June 13, 2019, Governor Andrew Cuomo signed into law, an appeal of the religious exemption for vaccinations. Once signed, it became effective immediately. On Thursday, June 13, 2019, my life changed completely. What the new law means for my son and 26,000 kids in NYS, is they would either have to receive up to 69 vaccines prior to entering school, or they would not be allowed to attend ANY private, Christian, Jewish, public, Daycare, Pre-school, Nursery, any grade school. NO VACCINES, NO SCHOOL at all. We have been left with the only option of home schooling, which I am completely at peace with, however I am naive to the home schooling world. (Side note- anyone reading who knows homeschoolers, hook me up, please!!) . All I could think of when this law was passed, was, “holy lord, I have to go underground to get my child educated”, hence the birth of my new blog name, “The underground momma”.

I will be completely honest, when the bill was passed on Thursday afternoon, I immediately began sobbing and didn’t stop (and couldn’t!) until Friday night when I went to bed. I didn’t sob because I worried about what I would do for my son’s education, I sobbed because I could not believe that we have come to a time where our first amendment rights were so blatantly violated, and no one cares. I sobbed because I knew my son, whom has never been vaccinated and healthy since conception, would never be granted his right to a free education. I sobbed because I knew that I would lose “friends” now that it would be public information about our private choice, and we would be cast out as the new version of “lepers”, except in reality, the healthiest lepers you could meet. I bounced in and out of sobbing and getting really angry. Not angry in the sense of screaming in Cuomo’s face, angry, more like an anger of THIS IS JUST WRONG, injustice. Angry that we have come to a point in society where apathy is the norm.

It just isn’t ok to settle, it just isn’t ok to live a fear based life, it just isn’t ok to not have the right to your faith and speech.

I want to share my story and I want to connect with others that find themselves either in my situation, or others that just plain believe in fighting to preserve our first amendment rights. So please stay tuned to catch a glimpse of my new path. A path that will be paved in truth, humor, faith, and ultimate respect for others. I am finding that I align well with some insightful quotes from truth speakers of the past, so I will close with one of my favorites.

“A man who stands for nothing will fall for anything”- Malcolm X

ok… two of my favorites..

“The truth is incontrovertible. Malice may attack it, ignorance may deride it, but in the end, there it is”- Winston Churchill
